Question
Is there anything peculiar about a 2001 Denver penny that is magnetic and has a brilliant facade?

Answer
Hello Terri,

This is unusual.
No U.S. cent would be attracted to a magnet except the 1943 steel cent.  I have no listing in my catalog for an off metal strike on 2001 cent coins, but it is not impossible either.
Your description "and has a brilliant facade" leads me to think it is plated. Copper takes plating well but if you magnify the (fillet’s) area where the raised lettering is you will find a build-up of the plating material.
Plated coins like this are worthless to true coin collectors. Most coin shops and all coin Shows Large or small will have people knowledgeable enough to identify this piece for you at no charge.

You would have to see if yours has been altered by plating with a magnetic metal or if it may be struck on another type of metal in error.
A 2001 cent should weigh 2.5 grams and measure 19 mm in diameter. If it is the right size and weight I can help you find a coin person in your area if you write me back.
