Coin and Paper Money Collecting/2004 dime

Question
Hello,
I work for a bank and found a dime the is smaller than the other dimes. The outside of the dime is smooth and raised along the edges. This give the appearance that the dime is sunken in. The dime is also discolored and dark, which I guess could be from wear. Can you tell me what you think?
Thank You,
April

Answer
Hi April,

It sounds like your coin might have been struck on a wrong planchet (such as a lincoln cent planchet) or it could have been damaged somehow outside of the Mint.  I cannot tell without seeing the coin in person or at least seeing a picture of it.  If you have a picture you can e-mail it to me at:  kieferscoins2000@yahoo.com
