Coin and Paper Money Collecting/2005-D Error Dime

Question
I found a 2005-D Dime that is missing almost half of the "silver" plating on the reverse is missing.  There is also a gouge on the reverse completely obscuring the "E" in ONE and partially obscuring the "D" in DIME, as well as a little flattening on the obverse on top of Roosevelts head Just after LIBERTY.

Are these minting Errors and if so what are they called, and how do they happen?

Answer
Hi Geoff,
What you have is a delamination.  Since the coins are "sandwiched", one piece of copper between 2 pieces of nickel, (Hence the phrase copper/nickel), it is possible that the part separate.
I have seen these and handled them on numerous occasions.
I suggest you check eBay for similar coins to get an idea of the value.
