Question
Is there any value in a 2006 nickel ($.05) that, through the printing process, has printing on only one side? In other words, one side is normal, the other smooth?
Thank you.
Rebecca

Answer
Hi Rebecca,

If you truly have a coin that has only been stamped on one side (due to another coin blank being in the press and preventing the stamping of one side), then you do have a rare error worth at least $100

However, I suspect you have one of the many coins I've recently been asked about that have been altered for use in magician's coins, that are worthless.

The difference is that the true error coin will be slightly mis-shapen, where the altered coin will be the right shape and will be slightly underweight.

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
