Question

George Washington Gold
I have 3 George Washington Gold Dollar coins that have the words printed upside down. They are all 3 in pretty decent shape but have been handles and have had finger prints on them. Are these misprints, or were they printed with the words both right-side up, and upside down? If they are misprints what could they be worth?

Answer
Brenda,

Sorry, but you don't have anything special there.  The odds are the same that the lettering will be either right-side-up or up-side-down -- it all depends on which way the coin entered the edge lettering machine -- the same odds as flipping a coin heads or tails.

There is no added value for up-side-down edge lettering.  For the Washington dollars, the only one with significant collector value are the ones with NO edge lettering.

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.
