Coin and Paper Money Collecting/2001 P Rhode Island "silver?" quarter
Expert: PAPAJACK - 1/5/2008
QuestionI was rolling my change, and saw a "silver" quarter in one stack. It is a 2001 P Rhode Island state quarter. There is a full front and back to the coin, full reeding. I looked at it through a 10X loupe, and there is no copper layer at all. Any idea what this might be? Just a clad coin where they ran out of cladding on that run?
AnswerHello Don,
Only some of the S mint quarter proof coin was made using 90% silver alloy weighing 6.25 grams.
All others were produced using the Nickel Clad Copper blanks that weigh 5.67 grams. So only if yours is a San Francisco issue could a silver coin blank get mixed into the regular production.
I have been many getting reports of plated coins being found. This may be what you have it would be evident to a trained coin person.
If you want you can give me the nearest large Cities, some postal zip codes I will refer you to some Local American Numismatic Assoc. Members and dealers in your area.
Any of them will be able to tell you for free what they think or direct you to one of the local shows and clubs available in your area.
Good Luck
