Question
QUESTION: I have a Seated Liberty Dollar.  It comes apart into two pieces and the center is open.  I was told it is classified as "AN OPIUM DOLLAR" from the past.
What can you tell me about it and what is it worth?
I am 83 years old and would like to have it authenticated. Where can I get this done?
Thanks

ANSWER: Hello Rose,
There are a couple of names for the coin you have, one is "opium dollar" and the other is "box dollar".  They are quite collectable, however I do not know of a grading service that would authenticate it since it is a US coin but it has been altered.  Their policies are that they do not authenticate altered coins.
If you are interested in having me look at it, and possibly purchasing it, please contact me at JoeHylas@aol.com
I will advise you as to how to send it to me for my inspection.

Answer
Hi Rose,
The coin would have to be physically inspected.  Maybe you have a local dealer who could look at it, explainthat you would like an offer on the coin.  If he makes and offer, it is genuine.  He would tell you if it was not genuine.
Ignore his offer, it would be worth much more than he would offer.  Chances are the offer would be $100-$150, however they are worth from $200 and up.
