Coin and Paper Money Collecting/1962 D Penny

Question
I have seen that 1962 pennies may be worth more than face value.  Some of the information I have been finding is somewhat unclear.  To retrace to the beginning; I have started a coin collection for my children.  I came across a 1962 penny in my pocket change.

How should I check to see if this is worth more than a cent?  The coin is brown.  Not sure the exact composition of it, but not a steel penny.  Any assistance would be welcome.

Thank you
Chris

Answer
Do not waste your time on such things go to a local dealer and educate yourself, visit the local library check out some books on coin collecting ,learn about coins ,collect what you enjoy what you are interested  in but those coins such as that 1962 cent out of circulation only worth a cent
