Coin and Paper Money Collecting/I have 2 questions

Question
I have a 1984 silver penny that seem to be lighter then a regular penny everything looks the same as any other penny except for the silver color. Why is this penny like that and is it worth more then just face value. Also I have a penny that I got out of a new roll one but the penny was never printed with anything on it. Is it worth anything.

Answer
Amanda,

Since 1983, all pennies are now made almost entirely of zinc, with a thin outer copper layer.  Most likely your 1984 penny never got its outer coper layer.

Both this and the blank planchet penny you have are considered more common errors for pennies -- worth a dollar or two apiece.

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
