Coin Collecting - FEATHER HEAD DIMES

Expert: Charles D Daughtrey - 10/17/2008

Question
DIMES i THINK THEY ARE FEATHER HEAD. wHAT ARE THEY WORTH

Answer
Hello.  I believe you are talking about 'Winged Head Liberty dimes", more commonly called "Mercury dimes" because people mistook the head on the obverse to be that of the Greek god Mercury.

There is no blanket answer of how much they are worth, because each one is different depending on the year and mint of manufacture as well as the exact condition of the coin.  Giving a simple answer to your question would give you no help, because frankly they are worth anywhere between 90 cents each and over $20,000 each...just depends on which one it is.

To be a little more precise and try to help, all of these dimes with wear - any flatness at all caused by circulation - renders them worth 90c each (because of the current value of silver) unless they are from 1916 or 1921.  These coins are worth more money, and it depends on their grade as to what they are worth.
