Coin and Paper Money Collecting/Possible Mis-minted 1972 quarter

Question
Hi,
My father insists that a 1972 quarter that he acquired is worth a lot of money. It is not the silver color, but dark and the "darkness" does not come off---even with silver cleaner. He thinks that it is one of two of these "special" mis-minted quarters. Is there any bit of truth to his claim?
AnswerHello Peggy,
There may be some value to the coin but without examining it no one can say. Things like this must be authenticated to get a high value.
I found no record of off metal struck quarters being found and sold dated 1972. Nor did I find any coin metal that naturally darkened over time. The only thing I could see is a piece that was missing the Clad Copper-Nickel layer. This would have left a copper color though not Dark.
Your picture is not so detailed that the surface can be examined. It looks like a chemical contamination and the edge view of the coin will show you if the copper core of the quarter is there.
