Question

Deformed edge on Georg
I have a Georgia State Quarter that has no ridges on the edge but has a smooth lip on the front and back edge,Making the coin's edge almost twice as thick as normal. Is this a mint defect or what could have caused this. Thank You,Leo

Answer
Leo,

Sorry but somebody has altered your coin after it left the mint, either by repeatedly tapping all along the rim with some kind of light hammer or by using some kind of rotary press, squishing the edge all around and forcing the extra metal to form a raised rim.

Considered a damaged coin, it has no added value.

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.
