Question
I recently received at work from a machine five dollar coins.  One of which immediately stood out to me, a Thomas Jefferson Dollar.  It looks identical totheother Thomas Jefferson Dollar only this one is silver in color.  Not "silverish," but the color of a new quarter, all the way around.  Theinscriptions are the same as on the gold colored dollar, everything is the same, again, except for the color.  I can send a picture if you like.  Is this a rare find?

Answer
Mike,

The only explanation I can offer is that somebody silver plated it.  There is no silver-colored dollar-sized planchet currently being used by the U.S. Mint.

You can try taking it to a coin show to have it examined first-hand by a dealer, to see if they can verify this.  Check the following websites for coin show listings in your area :

www.coinshows.com

www.coinworld.com

If indeed silver plated, it has no added collector value.

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
