Question
I have been speaking with ICA re investment possibilities. They are recommending a small german coin because it has more gold in it and sells for about $200.They also suggested the certified coins for $1400. I am a novice and would like your thinking about this company as well as which coins to buy.

Answer
Hello Helen,

They are probably referring to German 20 Marks or German 10 Marks gold pieces.  These are coins that trade for a few percentage points above the gold content.

The 20 marks has .23 oz of gold, just under 1/4 oz.

The 10 marks has .8 or roughly 12th oz of gold.

If the price of $200 is for the 20 marks piece, it is fair.  However, if it is for the 10 marks piece, stay away from it.  From phone calls I have rec'd., I am guessing they are selling the 10 marks pieces and reaping a huge profit.

Also, it doesn't pay to get the certified coin coin for $1400 unless it is an MS-65 St Gaudens US $20 gold piece certified by either PCGS or NGC.  Accept no other grading service.
