Question
My sons were given a large one dollar coin dated 1897. Are they worth more than the one dollar?

Answer
Samanth, need more information.  Was this a U.S. Morgan dollar? -- they were made in 1897.  Does it have a mint mark (on the back)?  What condition is it in?  Go to www.ebay.com and do a search for 1897 dollar and you'll see lots for sale.  You can compare them to your piece and check out prices.  Yes, the piece will be worth more than a dollar if it is the U.S. Morgan dollar, because that was made of silver, and silver is now just under $10 per ounce and I think the Morgan dollar has a bit under an ounce of silver.  Jim Lawniczak
