Question
I have 1878 Morgan silver dollar 2nd rev almost uncirulated. no mint marks and 7 t. what is the value of this coin also I have a 1881 gold 20 dollar coin that was put in to a necklace. i was offered 1045.00 for it. is this a good deal?

Answer
Marge,

The 1878 dollar in AU condition is worth about $30

If somebody offered you that much for that gold coin, after it had been mounted into a jewelry piece, take the money and run.  There's only about $700 worth of gold in that coin, and usually when gold coins get mounted like that, they are permanently scarred, making them no longer good coin collecting material.  HOWEVER, if the coin is in a gold mount, you would have to consider the gold content of the mount itself, before determining if the offer is a good one.

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.
