Question
I recently found a silver penny and after looking it over closely i noticed to 'D' marking underneath its date of production and i am very interested in finding out if this is a genuine minting error or if it is simply a mistake due to acid or simple wear and tear. If you could please point me in the right direction as to what i should do to get a properly inspection and appraisal of my penny i would greatly appreciate it.

Answer
Danny,

Even without seeing it, I am 99% sure that somebody just silver plated your coin at some time after it left the mint -- I get asked about stuff like this all the time.  If so, it has no collector value.

You can try taking the coin to a local coin show to have it looked at by the dealers there.  Check the following websites for local listings :

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
