Coin and Paper Money Collecting/Mint Error Coin
Expert: Jim Lawniczak - 11/10/2008
QuestionMr Lawniczak,
My father found a mint error coin around 1958 and has held it since. It is a silver Washington D quarter that was struck on a dime panchlet. The date was part of the coin that was left off from the strike.
He recently had the coin certified and sealed by NGC as "Mint Error AU 58" and now is considering selling it.
Any suggestion on the asking price? I have several photos that I could forward to you on request.
Regards,
Dave Reinhardt
AnswerDave, I do not have any experience with this type of mint error. There are two good ways to check -- one is to watch the market, the other is to find an expert in this type of error. I would recommend going to www.ebay.com and doing searches for things like "quarter struck dime planchet." I just did that and two items came up in the eBay stores, being offered at a fixed price. Remember, just because someone is asking a certain price doesn't mean they are going to get it. Note here that the two pieces both have dates on the items and It believe that that is likely to be of value to the market. You may want to check back every week or so to see what is offered.
Also, you should try similar searches at www.google.com. That may show you who has items like yours in stock and also who might be an expert. Good luck, Jim Lawniczak
