Coin and Paper Money Collecting/Original box for the coins

Question
QUESTION: Dear John,

Will the missing of the original case/box and/or the COA reduce the resale value of a coin?

I am currently considering buying a complete set of a gold coin series which were issued in 30-40 years ago. However, the seller informed me that all the coins they have do not have the Mint's issued original boxes, and some of the coins even do not have the COA.

As these coins are quite expensive, I am quite concerned about their future resale values if lacking the original box and/or the COA. I think it will probably be affected, but will that be slightly or substantially affected?

If it will likely reduce the value by, say, 10%, I am probably okay with that. However, for obvious reasons, I will reconsider the purchase if the resale values will be reduced by, say, 30-40%.

Thanks a lot!

QUESTION: The series is the Hong Kong Lunar Gold Coin Series, issued by the Royal British Mint during the 70's and the 80's when Hong Kong was still a British colony. There are 12 coins in this series.

I found that this series is very difficult to gather completely. I find only one place to find the complete set. However as I mentioned, they do not have the original boxes.
As the complete set will cost about US$6,700 in total, I am a bit concerned about future resale value.

Thanks.

Answer
