Coin and Paper Money Collecting/Type and value of coins

Question
Dear Neil,
My father just passed and we found some coins that date back into the late 1800's.  In addition, I found an oval piece the said something to the effect of 1/4 or 1/2 cent.  Most of the coins are silver dollars or half dollars.  What is the best way to ensure an accurate value to the novice?

Answer
There is no way a novice can ensure getting fair value for coins without a lot of research. The usual way is to send someone like me an email with photographs of the coins and I will give you a ballpark number of value to give you an idea if it is worth your time to do the research. nsberman@msn.com
