Question
what nickel is worth a lot ..i have a 1937 nicel encased in mammoth tusk bought at a auction  someone told me if it is the right year and non magnetic its worth a lot

thanks

Answer
Hi Michelle,

First off, all nickelas are no magnetic.  I think whomever told you this was confused.  In 1943, pennies were made of steel because the copper was being used in the war effort.  Steel is attracted to a magnet.
Howver, there were a few coin blanks from the previous year (copper) that are not magnetic.  1943 copper pennies are worth from $25,000 and up.
The only 1937 nickel has has any big value is an error coin, the buffalo only has 3 legs.  These are worth from $800 and up.
