Question
Found a quarter sized copper colored coin during the demo of an old house.  Has a date of 1747 and what looks like some spreading wings.   Any insights?

Answer
Hello Walter,

My experience is with coins that were issues by the USA Mint. Colonial coins are not my strong point.
If your coins is dated prior to 1776 it could be from any country whose people came to populate the New World.
Can you post an image of the piece?
Are there any other markings on this piece?

Historically to be a coin this metallic piece needs a couple of things;
1) A country of issue on it.
2) A denomination.
3) A date
4) National symbol or Motto.

If it is missing these things it may be a token or commemorative medal.

I might be able to help you find a Coin dealer in your area you can take it to for their free opinion.

Write me back with some zip codes and Telephone area codes for your area, and the nearest large city I will get you names of Professional American Numismatic Association member/dealers, In your area.
Please note that all ANA members and dealers are bound by their "Code of Ethics." In general, coin dealers are also involved with numismatic clubs and will be acquainted with other collectors in the area. Most will be happy to refer you to someone who specializes in the type of coins in the collection.

Please, let me know if I can be of any more help. Ask me your question  and check the private box on the page.

Thank You and Good Luck
