Question
Hi to you,I'd like to know more about this "contingous coin''.recently,i've heard from my friend that a 1956-D lincoln was sold for $49,000 because he said the coin is a continguous coin.Is it true that this one of a kind  lincoln variety is rare?how rare ?can yo give me an info of how it became posible?how about in the other dates aside from 1956?thanks and more power to you!

Answer
Jason,

All that a "contiguous mintmark" means is that the mintmark contacts the date.  At the time these coins were minted, mintmarks were added manually to the working dies.  So they are found in many different locations.

The rarity of this coin is dubious.  A working die will create tens or hundreds of thousands of coins before wearing out, so there has to be alot more of these out there.

I don't know what that guy from South Florida is up to, but it seems to me to be alot of hype for a whoopdiedoo coin that almost nobody cares about.

eBay listing for this coin -- which did NOT sell -- can be found here :
