Question
i have recently purchased several cardboard holders of lincoln pennies.Thes coins are layered with dirt and corrosion.there are 3 1909 dvb s and a 1914 d with the dirt layered on these coins it is difficult to know how to grade. what would you  recommend i do as a first step thanks lee winkler

Answer
Lee,

Dirt can be removed, but corrosion is permanent.  Other than just soaking in warm soapy water, do not try to clean the coins yourself -- most likely you will only make matters worse.

If heavily corroded, most coins will only be valued at grade GOOD or less, depending on how bad they are.  If just dirty, and the dirt can be removed without damaging or discoloring the coin, then you can grade and price accordingly.

Without seeing the coins I cannot offer specific suggestions.  I recommend that you find a local coin show, take the coins with you, and show them to a couple dealers.  See what they think about whether the coins can be helped or not.

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
