QUESTION: Sorry it was a half dollar from that year. thanks for getting back to us so fast!
AnswerHello Jan,
As for a rough price range on any coin - Collectors have devised a numerical grading system for coins. Depending on how much wear a coin has. It goes from 1 to 70. With 1 being barely identifiable as a coin and 70 being perfect. Coins taken from circulation usually fall between grade 8-VG (very Good) and grade 50 (AU Almost Uncirculated). Only a strictly uncirculated coin can grade in Mint State between 60 and 70.
They were 30 millimeters in diameter the denomination is inscribed on them. And a couple of different mints made them.
Called the 1839 HALF DOLLAR - CAPPED BUST type Mintage: Philadelphia 1,392,976 and Mintmark: "O" (for New Orleans, LA) above the date on the obverse. Mintage: Circulation strikes: 178,976 both with reeded edges.
GRADE G3 F12 EF40 AU50 MS60 MS62
1839 $43 $59 $185 $335 $1000 $1350
1839-O $144 $275 $650 $1250 $2600 $3575
Prices for extremely fine to About Uncirculated auctioned for $97.75
And the other type half dollar was called SEATED LIBERTY type its Mintage Philadelphia was 1,972,400 and the edge was reeded
Prices for extremely fine to About Uncirculated auctioned for About Uncirculated. "No Drapery", sold for $891.25
Note… a coin can not be properly evaluated without being seen! (As you can see by the auction results some sell at low prices when eye appeal is missing.)
