Question
I have a 1943 steel lincoln penny and the everything is ok except i noticed that the D that is stamped is on lincoln shirt or right below tie instead below the date. Is this a rare coin or error?

Hello Anthony,

There are several reported errors of the D mint mark re-punched into the die off of the original location.
All the ones I have seen did have a remnant of the original “D” mint mark touching the newer “D “. I am tiring to say the relocation of the mint mark was not so far off the original placement.

If yours is actually on the Coat of Lincoln (past the 9 in the date) and no other mark is where it is supposed to be you may have an altered coin not an error.

A coin like this will need to be seen in person to be authenticated.
Can you send an image of the newspaper article?
Or attach it to a question at this site?

An image of the coin itself would not be too much help. Something like this needs to be looked at under magnification by a trained eye.

Error coin collecting is a branch outside of normal coin collecting. There is no fixed pricing on error coins published and each coin would have to be seen to be evaluated and sells on its own merits.

If you do want someone to look at the piece for you write back and mark your question as private!
I will direct you to an AMERICAN NUMISMATIC ASSOCIATION MEMBER/DEALER near there. They are ethical and trustworthy.

I hope this information is helpful.

Feel free to ask another question about US Coins.

Good Luck
