Question
a 1979 penney "D" mint mark, very thin but does not appear
to be worn or smashed in any way. both sides are ledgeable
is this a rare coin?

Answer
Hello Kathleen,

How high are the rims? Do they extend unusually high from the face of the coin?

This coin needs to be weighed to help decide if it is truly an error.
Sometimes US coins are found made on another countries coin blank. The USA Mints do contract the stamping of coins from other countries.

Also many coins that are well struck may seem thinner than another of the same type but the specifications must be checked to look at it as an error.

If you can find out how many grams it weighs and write back I will find out more about it.

I look forward to hearing from you with more information.
Please make your question private.

Thank You and Good Luck
