Question
My grandfather used to collect coins before he died, and started me on collecting low-value more common coins. He passed away several years ago, and left my grandmother and i a safe full of coins, most of which we have no idea what they are. There is one new one we found today that practicully interested us. It looks to be a silver coin, about the size of a modern day dime, with no ridges on the side, what looks to be lady liberty on the head, stamped with a circle of "the united states of america" around her head, with a date of 1867 on it, and on the flip side, a roman numeral three surrounded by a christmas looking type wreth. What is this?

Answer
Mia,

You have found a 3-Cent piece (made of nickel).  1867 is considered a common date for these.  IN circulated condition, it's worth about $12.00

Info & pictures about these can be found here :

I hope this helps,

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.
