Coin and Paper Money Collecting/double sided quarter

Question
I have a double sided quarter in my possession. Ive had it for some time and
got it in my change. When I flip a normal quarter off my thumb, it makes a
ping noise. THis quarter makes a thud. COuld that be because it is double
sided? If it is a fake, how does someone do something like this as this quarter
looks so authentic? Are there any pics on the web I could compare it to?
thanks.

Answer
Lorne,

You have a manually altered "Magician's Coin", made by mechanically grinding down two coins so that the pieces fit together, then gluing the pieces together.  If you use a magnifier, on one side of the coin or the other, you will find a seam along the raised rim where the two pieces fit together.

You can find these at any time in magic shops or on eBay.com selling for a couple dollars.

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
