Coin and Paper Money Collecting/1971 moon penny

Question
I have a penny from 1971 that has a small picture of the moon landing on it along with the date of the actual moon landing 7-20-69. It's in really good condition, and I have never seen a coin like this before. However I haven't been able to find information about it. I'm curious as to its value and I'm hoping you can help me.

Answer
Cassandra,

I haven't heard of this particular one before, but there are many different counterstamped pennies out there -- like stamped with U.S. states, the Liberty Bell, Kennedy's head, even a pipe so that it looks like Lincoln's smoking it.

The images on your coin, for whatever reason, were added to the coin after it left the mint, making it a novelty item.

Value at a dollar or less.

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
