Coin and Paper Money Collecting/2001 Silver Eagle Dollar

Question
Hi. I have a proof 2001 Silver Eagle dollar that I bought from a local coin dealer a few years ago.  As far as I can tell from the research I have done, it is a genuine specimen from the U.S. Mint.  The only thing that I cannot figure out is that there should be a mint mark to the left of the eagle's tail and there is none.  Also, the Walking Liberty figure on the other side is plated in gold, which I am sure the Mint did not do.  Any ideas? Thank you.

Answer
Hi Gary,

Sorry, but from your description, what you have is not a PROOF silver eagle.

All 2001 proofs will have a mirrored finish in the fields and a "W" mintmark on the reverse.

It sounds to me that you have an UNC silver eagle (since they did not have mintmarks) that somebody outside the mint gold plate highlighted and put into a fancy box.  Miller Mint is famous for doing this.

These novelty items were hot for a while, but are passe' now.

Value at about $16.00 for the silver it contains.

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.
