Question
Dan, I was given a "The 50 State Bicentennial Medal Collection Hallmarked First Edition Proof Set struck in solid sterling silver by the Franklin Mint" by my grandmother.  It is missing 14 of the coins.  Would you have an idea as to the value, and also where can I find the missing coins to complete the set? It is in a blue binder.  Thank you very much for reading this.

Answer
Luigi,

To calculate the value of each coin, remove one from any capsule it may be in, weigh it in TROY ounces, multiply by .925 (for Sterling), then multiply by the current price of silver (currently about $18.00 per TROY ounce -- see www.kitco.com for current quotes).

Take this result and add a dollar or two, and this will be the approximate amount you can expect to pay for each missing coin -- assuming you can find them.  You can try looking on eBay.com for them -- you might get lucky.

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
