Coin and Paper Money Collecting/Gibraltar Dog coins

Question
Dear Dan:

I am not sure you can help since your specialties are US coin issues but perhaps. I am wondering if thre is a good way to tell the difference between the Gibralta coper-nickle coin and the pure silver ones. I notice the silver ones have an "Ag" on the dog side of the coin and the copper-nickle ones don't. Do you know if there any other ways to tell?
Thank you for taking the time to answer my question.

Answer
Bill,

Not being familiar with the dog coins, I probably won't be much help, but the "Ag" on the coin is the elemental sign for Silver, so that sounds like the best way to tell.

You might also try weighing one with the "Ag" mark, and one without the mark, to see if there is a difference in weight.

On U.S. coins, most of the copper-nickel coins (like dime, quarter, half) exhibit a copper stripe on the outer edge, when the coin is viewed from the side -- perhaps the copper-nickel dog coins do to?

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
