Question
I have two gold Venezuelan "Cacique" coins mounted in handmade heavy 18k holders that are used for a necklace or bracelet. One coin has the face of the chief of the Paramacay tribe and is approx the size of a silver US dollar. The other is of the Mara chief and is approx the size of a US $20 dollar gold piece. They both have 20 grams of gold stamped on the coin by the Swiss Interchange Bank with dates 1955-1960 although the larger coin seems much heavier than the smaller one. They both are in very fine condition. Excluding the heavy 18k gold mounting, what would you opinion the approxinate values would be for resale and for insurance purposes?
AnswerHi William, these are unofficial 90% gold coins. The larger 37.1 millimeters 60 Bolivianos coin was issued in 1961 featuring Mara and weighs 20 grams and contains .5787 of an ounce of gold. The smaller 60 Bolivianos featuring Paramacay should be 30.1 millimeters, be dated 1955, be thicker at 22.2 grams weight and would contain .6424 of an ounce of gold. If the smaller one also has the 1955-60 date then it is unlisted as yet in the catalog Unusual World Coins (try a library) and may have a corresponding weight (6.667 grams) and amount of gold content in relation to its difference in diameter unless it is thicker to compensate. Both would likely be worth a little over their gold value depending on amount of wear and collector demand. You may find similar pieces on Ebay.com for comparison.
