Question
i came upon a 1978 penny that seems to have the oklahoma state stamped on
it. its located right next to Abrahams face. inside the state its got the initials OK
which i believe is for Oklahoma. but in either case do you think this might be a
misprint? or do u believe it was stamped on after it went into circulation?

Answer
David,

This is one of a set of 50 manually manufactured state pennies.  This is NOT something done at the mint, but rather somebody took a roll of pennies and manually stamped each state image onto them.

These were usually mounted on a display board and sold as a novelty item -- recently getting about $20 for the set on eBay.

A single coin, like you have, is worth about 10 cents as a novelty item.

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
