Question

1909 Centavo Back
My husband just found a 1909 one centavo coin in an old strong box.  It is in used condition.  It does have a small S to the left of the date.  It says one centavo filipinas on one side with a guy sitting.  On the other side it has an eagle on top of an American coat of arms type thing.  Any info would be much appreciated.

Answer
HI Dianne,

Thank you for your question and for including the picture.

While under the sovereignty of the U.S., coins for the Philippines were minted in the U.S. -- your coin was minted in San Francisco -- hence the "S" mintmark.

While different and unusual, these one centavao Philippine coins are not extremely rare.  However, 1909 is one of the better dates.  In the condition shown, it's worth about $10 (compared to $1-$2 for more common dates).

I hope this helps,

Dan
