Coin and Paper Money Collecting/1945 W Mercury Dime

Question
My son has a 1945 W Mercury dime that is in excellent condition and appears to be gold.  I have two questions.  Is this a rare coin and is it gold?  I have read other articles that say there were never any gold coins minted and is probably a gold plating or a chemical reaction.  Please let me know.  If you would like a digital image, let me know.

Answer
All Mercury dimes have a W, actualy a AW, for Adolph Weinman, the designer, on the obverse to the right of the neck. It is a common coin in all conditions except brand new and perfect. Silver can tone naturally into gold colored tones, but if it looks like a "gold" coin it is probably plated.
