Question
I have a $50 gold coin (St Gaudens double eagle) that has no date other than mcmlxxxvi; it is mounted as a setting for necklace. Any idea what it may be worth?

Answer
Hello Ruth,

If you have written the date correctly in your question it is a 1986 Fine Gold One Ounce Bullion coin. It should show a $50 DOLLAR face value.

This was the first year of issue and is just copying the Saint-Gaudens design. The originals made from 1907 to 1933 and were only $20 dollar denominations and used less gold.

They sell for the price of gold bullion which changes each day. You can get it on the financial news morning noon or night.
Or you can look on the web at

Gold had a low of $960 an ounce today so your "necklace" would start at that value.

Good Luck
