Question
I have recently inharited a Morgan $ which I believe is an 1889 CC. Though I'm no expert, it appears to be the real deal. However it lacks any luster, and is conciderabley worn. I was hoping you might be able to authenticate, grade, and possibly appraise it for me... or tell me its a fraud and im waisting my time. Any help would be greatly appriciated. If you get back to me i would be more than willing to send u a picture of the coin.

Answer
Hello Mark,

There are reports of fakes for this coin as well as many reproductions that have been doctored by people to look old and hide the die characteristics that mark where the coin was made.

The coin would have to be seen by a professional to decide its authenticity. A picture would not show the difference properly. The true die markers are very small and harder to see on a worn or discolored coin.

If you need to find a coin dealer in your area write me back. If the dealer thinks it is an authentic 1899-CC you should have it professionally graded and encapsulated for your own collection or to sell in the future.

Thank You and Good Luck
