Question
QUESTION: I received one proof set in which George washington's face has many freckles on it--not scratches per se but a discolored set of freckles.  They are not in the proof case but are on the coin itself.  Any idea of value or how we go about determining value?

ANSWER: David,

Sounds like a mint worker sneezed on your coin, causing it to spot.

I doubt your coin has any added value -- more likely you may have to discount its value.

Sorry,

Dan

QUESTION: Thanks for the quick response; I guess I need to relly look this over more closely or take it to someone to see for sure? No today as I double checked the Phil Wash dollars I got, I found i have an excellent Godless dollar error with with wide rays (like light) emiting from the face of George and going to the coin inner ring--very easily seen and in excellent shape.  Do I send this to someone like PPCGS to get it graded?  How do I get it certified? Is there extra value for a error like this?

Answer
Hi David,

If you get it certified by PCGS or NGC and if it gets at least a grade of MS-65 or MS-66, then it willl have a significant added value -- likely over $100, and maybe well over that.

It will probably cost you about $20 to get it certified.  But you will either have to go through an authorized dealer to submit it, or join their club, or go to a show where they are set up and taking submissions.
