Coin and Paper Money Collecting/mint and proof sets 1960's to 80's

Question
Dan,
I have quite a few proof and mint sets ranging from the 60's to the 80's as well as a ton of blue Ikes.
Quite a few of these coins are exceptional in condition.
My question is would it be worth it for me to say cut the uncirculated coins into individual "sealed packets" not to touch them and have them graded individually?
Looking at some of the Pcgs prices for individuals it appears I may have some real gems.
Thanks in advance.
Carl

Answer
Carl,

There may be some gems you could send in to be graded, but I seriously doubt you would want to send them all in.  You would need to closely inspect your coins for the absolutely flawless ones, and submit only those.  If you dont get MS-69 or MS-70 grades, the cost of certifying will be more than what you can sell the coins for.

While the PCGS Guide can be a helpful reference, it can be somewhat unrealistic in relation to what you can actually get for your coins within a reasonable amount of time, and especially if you are selling to a dealer.

So you will need to pick out the absolute gems, look in the price guide to see if they have a significant value in MS-69 grade, and submit only them.

You can do some searching on eBay to get a more realistic idea of what these coins will actually sell for.

Good luck,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.
