Question

1994 penny
I have 1994 penny D mint,it is gray and the edge is different.it is not smooth it looks like a train wheel with edges that stick out.I've had this coin a lot of years because when i got it i thought it was different. can you help me with what it is.

Answer
Joe,

I hope you had a nice holiday.

Thanks for the picture!

It looks like your coin has been chemically altered to remove the thin outer copper layer, revealing the almost completely zinc core.

As such, it would be considered an altered coin -- no collector value.

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.
