Question
My son was left some coins from his grandfather and these two seem so different than the others.  There is no mint marking under the eagle's beak that I was told to look for.

Can you give me any insights?

Thank you,

Michele Shuman

Answer
Michelle,

It sounds like you have a couple of Morgan dollars -- like the one pictured here :

http://www.coinfacts.com/silver_dollars/morgan_dollars/1880_morgan_dollars/1880s...

As shown in the picture, the mintmark would be located below the eagle's tail, beneath the ribbon and above the "DO" in DOLLAR.  There may be no mintmark, which would indicate the coin was made at the main mint in Philadelphia.

If you send me pictures of both sides of the coins, I can give you estimated values for them.

Send to : Working.Man@usa.net

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
