Coin and Paper Money Collecting/Golden Quarter

Question
Hi, I came across a U.S. quarter that looks like it was minted in the same metal that the Sacagawea dollars are made of. It's date is 2000, and is the state quarter for South Carolina.
I've heard rumors that "mistake coins" are worth a little, and was wondering (as if you couldn't guess) if this mistake was worth anything.
Thank you for your time,
Cassie

Answer
Cassie,

It's not possible to fit the blank for a dollar coin into the press that is making quarters, so you must have something else -- perhaps gold plated or just toned (tarnished).  If you take it to a local coin shopp or coin show, a dealer can inspect it and tell what you have.

You may find a local coin show listed here :

www.coinworld.com

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
