Question
Hello(:>) we have a coin that has no date on it but appears old. Its discolored. On one side is an eagle in flight carrying a waving flag, with 8 stars lining the ridge and no lettering what so ever. On the other side is a weighing scale and it has the following words displayed "One Troy Ounce" "31.1 grams" ".999 fine silver" and "Silver trade unit" Help(:>).

I checked out a few different coin books at the library and it doesn't appear to be listed. I checked the internet and haven't had any luck there either except I found this site and found someone had suggested to someone else for a different coin, that they check out a book on unusual coins.
So I did but while it lists coins VERY similar in it (such as the front with a different back, and the back but with a different front) but its not there.
Hmmm.
Any thoughts?
Thanks(:>)

Answer
Vanessa,

Technically, this is not a coin, but rather a privately minted silver round -- used for the buying and selling of bulk silver.

Its value is based only on the ounce of silver it cointains -- currently about $18.00

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
