Question
Hello, I have some coins that look like brass that say "Good for 50 cents in trade at any cooperative firm..." Bennington Bicentennial 1961. I imagine these were made for the Bennington, VT celebration in 1961, Would you know what they are made of? Or if they have any value? Thank you very much! This is a great service. Nancy

Answer
Nancy,

I'm not familiar with this particular trade token, but I would bet it is made of brass (or maybe bronze).  It was probably created for a group of businesses in Bennington that got together and paid for it to be made, and agreed to honor them in their businesses.

Generally tokens like this, from this time period, sell for $2 to $5.

You might try doing a search on eBay to see if you can find a matching item.

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
