Question
Hi Dan!
I have a gold piece that is slightly bigger than a dime, slightly smaller than a penny. Unsure whether the thickness is like a dime or penny though. It's been stored away. What I do know is that it shows a picture of AND says the words "Independence Hall" on the front. On the back it shows a picture of the U.S. Capital. It says 'United States of America Bicentennial" and 1776-1976. The front also says ".900 fine gold". It is in what I would say is Mint condition. Has been kept in a coin box.
Do you have any idea what this is?

Answer
Crystal,

I am familiar with this.  It is a privately minted bicentennial medal -- made in about 1976.  It was not made by the U.S. Mint, but rather a private company.

Value will be for the gold it contains -- approximately 1/24th of an ounce of gold.  At the current value of gold, it is worth about $37.00

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
