Question
Joe, how do I tell fi this coin is a replica or fake? it is in great condition, struck well on center, the tree has 4 roots all pointing to the right. I have searched high and low and can not find a photo that matches it.  John

Answer
Hi John,
This is not going to be easy.  First off, look to see if the surface of the coin has any bumps or porosity.  Also look around the rim for a seam, sometimes 2 halves are produced and then glued together.

Another thing to look at is if the coin just looks "too good".  You have to remember that the minting process 350 years ago is not what it is today.  The coin should have somewhat of a handmade look to it.

Your best bet is to send the coin to Numismatic Guarantee Corp in Sarasota Florida.
For a fee of about $35, they will authenticate it, and if it is genuine, encapsulte it in a hold with serial number and grade.

Good Luck,
