Question
Dear Dan:

I have a slabbed and graded 1878 rev of 79 VAM 202 graded by PCI as MS62.

The questions are:  What does the VAM 202 identify and what is/would the value and credibility of this grading be?

Appreciate anything you can provide.

Thanks

Allen Ross

Answer
Allen,

VAM 202 Definition (from VAM book) :

Lines in all wheat leaves, with more detail in cotton blossom tops than type II obverse.  Thin letters in LIBERTY. Complete line at bottom of cap. Date slightly doubled at top inside of upper and lower loops of 8's and left sides of 1 and 7 shafts; all left and right stars doubled.

I-3 (interest low)
R-5 (rarity medium)

Not having examined the coin I cannot be for sure, but I would tend to trust the VAM 202 attribution on the holder and PCI MS-62 grades are usually correct.

Value at about $70.00

I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.
