Coin and Paper Money Collecting/copper colored state quarter

Question
My wife showed me a state quarter the other day that was badly tarnished. After looking at it, I decided to clean it. To my surprise, it was tarnished so bad because it is copper on both sides.
Any info you can give me on this would be appreciated.I am being told that there is no such thing as both sides being copper although some have one side with an error.
Thanks,
Jim

Answer
Hi Jim,
It is possible to have a copper planchet without the nickel layering.

Unfortunately, cleaning coins lessens their value.

Now that it is cleaned, it may be worth $5 whereas it probably would have fetched $100+

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
